Huskers update

After beginning their season with a respectable record of 16-6, Tech began Big XII play and went 6-10-1 in conference games (although they did get some non-conference wins over New Mexico, Arizona State, Texas Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist.)
Tech has an offense that is very similar to Nebraska’s on paper, putting up lots of hits and runs, and stealing plenty of bases. The similarity diappears when it comes to defense and pitching, though. I’d look for the Tech offense to put up 3-4 runs a game on the Huskers, but the Huskers should run the decent Tech starters from the game early and light up a weak Red Raider bullpen.
The Huskers, of course, have been as hot as you can get lately, with their only loss in April coming to Texas in Austin, before UNL took the last two games of the series.
I said last week that “Personally, I’d be happy with taking 2/3 from the Longhorns in Austin.”
Yes, I am happy.
It’s the first time since 2002 that Texas had lost a Big XII series at home, when they lost to … wait for it … the Huskers. UNL now has an all-time record of 22-17 against the Longhorns, adding to the prestige of being the only Big XII team with a historical winning record against the Longhorns. Apparently “we mess with Texas”…
Texas Tech has a 19-8 record at home this season, but they were just swept at home by Oklahoma last week… Add that to how hot the ‘Skers have been of late, and I’m going to guess…
Broom.
[knocks on wood again]
Here’s who I’m guessing will be the probable starters for this weekend’s games:
Friday 4/28 6:35pm CDT
(Nebraska) Joba Chamberlain [5-3, 3.35 ERA, 48.1 IP, 55 K, .213 AVG]
(Texas Tech) Miles Morgan, RHP [5-5, 3.79 ERA, 80.2 IP, 90 K, .271 AVG]
Saturday 4/29 2:05pm CDT
(Nebraska) Tony Watson [6-0, 2.54 ERA, 63.2 IP, 49 K, .217 AVG]
(Texas Tech) Colt Hynes, LHP [4-1, 2.87 ERA, 47.0 IP, 27 K, .203 AVG]
Sunday 4/30 1:05pm CDT
(Nebraska) Johnny Dorn [7-2, 3.35 ERA, 59.0 IP, 40 K, .244 AVG]
(Texas Tech) Josh Tomlin, RHP [1-3, 3.64 ERA, 29.2 IP, 24 K, .270 AVG]
Nebraska is ranked #3/4/4/4 in the polls, and #5/5 in the RPI simulations…
Texas Tech comes in unranked in the national polls and #56/56 in the RPI simulations.

[…] Last year, I did some work with trying to compare the Huskers’ stats to their peers. As some of you are already familiar, I’m a big fan of batting average on balls in play (BABIP). The problem is, as far as I’ve been able to find, there hasn’t been any work done to establish a standard for BABIP at the collegiate level. […]
