Updated NCAA BABIP Numbers
For those that are interested in such things, I’ve divined some more numbers for the Batting Average on Balls in Play for collegiate baseball dating back to 1998. As I suspected, NCAA BABIP is around .340.
| Teams | Year | BABIP |
| 14 | 1998 | .346 |
| 24 | 1999 | .351 |
| 72 | 2000 | .348 |
| 94 | 2001 | .345 |
| 265 | 2002 | .342 |
| 269 | 2003 | .339 |
| 284 | 2004 | .340 |
| 287 | 2005 | .339 |
| 278 | 2006 | .339 |
The Teams column is there to give some weight to the numbers. The data from 1998 to 2001 varies in accuracy, due to the smaller sample size, but is still fairly reliable. I think.
After 2001, when the NCAA imposed restriction on aluminum bat performance, the BABIP dropped a bit, as I suspected it did.
