  • Selig Loves Milwaukee’s Frozen Custard

While perusing the AP wire, I ran across a story about the continuing Bud Selig and Barry Bonds drama, and whether Selig will attend the game where Bonds hits 756, blah, blah, blah. Hidden in this meaningless drama was an amusing little bit of personal information about Bud Selig.

“This is a matter between the Giants and Barry,'’ said Selig, who was treated to his favorite frozen custard dessert flown in from Milwaukee. “As far as I’m concerned, as long as things that are being done are in the best interest of the sport, whether it’s contractual or anything else, I don’t make those judgments.'’

Selig must really like that brand of frozen custard to have it flown from Milwaukee to San Francisco. The only food I’d pay to have flown across the country would probably be some corn-fed Nebraska beef. But I already live here, so that’s not a problem.

Any Milwaukeens Milwaukeeites people from Milwaukee with some insight as to the brand of frozen custard Bud likes, and if it’s really good enough to get flown in?

[UPDATE] And I’ve found the answer in Ann Killion’s column in the San Jose Mercury News

Selig is an amiable guy, a grandfatherly type who would be swell to go with to have a Gilles frozen custard (a Milwaukee specialty shipped in for the day’s dessert). But he isn’t the guy you want to come to for a straightforward answer or a forceful decision.

Apparently Bud Selig has eaten a hot dog and frozen custard there every day for the past 29 years. EVERY DAY FOR 29 YEARS!

“It’s a place people can come and be left alone,” [Gilles owner] Tom Linscott said. “People respect the privacy of people like Bud Selig here, and just let him eat his meal.”

Perhaps it’s not that they respect his privacy, but that they’re deathly afraid of anyone who can eat hot dogs and dessert every day for three decades and not be dead or weigh 500+ pounds.

One Response to “Selig Loves Milwaukee’s Frozen Custard”

    1. Dennis Says:

Being from Milwaukee and having actually seen him at the place as well as his favorite spot for lunch on North Ave. I’d have to say the Custard stand he goes to is pretty good. For those of you who don’t know ice cream! This is ICE CREAM. I happen to like Kopp’s best but hey I play ball right near Gilles and go there occassionly for a scoop or two…
Use to be a big “kid” hang out and hot summer nights it still is.
